The Soft City is Daniel Speight, an East London based artist with a love for London’s architecture. This unusual pseudonym is in direct reference from Jonathan Rabian’s book on his experience of London in which drove Dan to combine his abilities as a visual artist with his obsession of depicting the modern city experience. His current ‘Book Block’ project is street art in the most literal sense; in which illustrations of the city’s streets are screenprinted directly onto the sides of reclaimed books.
Combining the digital and the handmade, ‘Book Block’ transforms shelves into streets, breathing new life into old reading material. The results are considered pieces of work that draw a new connection with the materials and space around us. Books and cities share something in common; they both hold stories. And it is with this relationship that generates the will and inspiration to investigate new ways of making buildings from books.
